American Jennifer Lane, mezzo-soprano is "a singer whose dark, bottomless
voice is matched by her expressiveness and intelligence." The press has described her singing as "clear, rich,
plangent," "compelling and dramatic," and possessing "agility and charisma."
Jennifer has previously appeared in Honolulu in the Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu in 2000
under the direction of Carl Crosier, and at Hawai`i Theatre singing Schumann’s Paradies und Peri, with Timothy Carney and
the Masterworks Festival Chorus and Orchestra in 2006.
She has appeared at festivals worldwide, with such noted conductors Michael Tilson-Thomas, Mstislav Rostropovich, William Christie, Nicholas McGegan, Andrew Parrott,
Christopher Hogwood, Marc Minkowski, Helmut Rilling, and Robert Shaw, among others.
Ms. Lane is internationally recognized for her striking interpretations of repertoire ranging from the early baroque to today's composers. She recently created the
role of Charmin London, opposite baritone Rodney Gilfrey, in Libby Larsen's Everyman Jack an opera about the author and
adventurer Jack London, for Sonoma City Opera. Throughout 2008, she toured the dual roles of Messaggiera/Speranza in Monteverdi's Orfeo throughout Spain with the Valencian group Capella Ministrers under the direction of Carles Magraner. Ms. Lane's opera credits include l'Opéra de Monte
Carlo, Aix-en-Provence, Les Arts Florissants, New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera, among many others.
Jennifer Lane has over forty commercial CD recordings, several of which have won Gramophone and other awards, as have her films: Purcell's Dido
& Æneas for BRAVO Television with the Mark Morris Dance Group and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, and The Opera Lover, a romantic comedy. Among Ms. Lane's most recent CD
recordings are Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex (Jocasta), Schoenberg's Gurrelieder (Waldtaube)
and his song cycle Das Buch Der Hängenden Gärten, and her solo CD's The Pleasures & Follies of
Love and Airs de Cour (French Courtly Airs). Ms Lane's career also spans opera production and direction. During her nine years at Stanford University, she produced and
directed several full productions and created an early music collegium. Ms. Lane's more recent productions include updated stagings of Handel's Semele and Acis & Galatea at the Shakespeare Blackfriars Theatre in Staunton, VA. In addition to master classes, workshops and clinics
in the US and abroad, Ms. Lane is currently associate professor of voice at the University of North Texas.
